How do you find the Population and Housing Census 2011 data and maps?

i. On the Redatam page – click the On-line process as shown by the red arrow to access the on-line tabulation and mapping.

redatam page1

ii. On the On-line page there is a list of available databases on the left-corner as shown by the arrow. You will note that only one database is currently on the system which is the Samoa Population and Housing Census database. (We hope to include more in the future).

redatam page2

iii. Once you click on the Samoa Population and Housing menu item shown above, the page below will show the Census 2011 link. Click on CENSUS 2011 link.

redatam page3

iv. On the left-side of the page is the list of processes which are available on Redatam for the Census 2011 database. The map shows the 48 political districts of Samoa by name and location. At present the maps are only made available by district and region. Data tables are available at all levels; village, district and region.

redatam page4

v. If you click on the Metadata sub-menu it shows the data dictionary for the output variables in the Census 2011 database.

redatam page5

vii. To view the Population and Housing data separately, click on BASIC CHARATERISTICS.

redatam page6

viii. Under the BASIC CHARACTERISTICS, you will see two datasets, the Housing (Household) Variables and the Population (Persons) Variables – Click on the Person Variables first.

redatam page7

ix: Note that in the Select a Variable box of the Person Variables 2011, you can see all the variables as also shown in the Population metadata. The system is now ready for you to create your own Tables and Graphs or Table and Maps. How?

1. POPULATION DATA A. TABLES AND GRAPHS – BASIC CHARACTERISTICS

B. TABLES AND MAPS – BASIC CHARACTERISTICS

a. Steps to creating Tables and Graphs for Population variables:

Under BASIC CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Step 1: Table title: You can type in any title for your new table and year of the data
  • Step 2: Select a variable: Highlight the variable that you are interested, Example – P12 Marital Status
  • Step 3: Area break level – This option is not available in this section (BASIC CHARACTERISTICS) hence always leave it as MISSING
  • Step 4: Filter by – The default for the Total is none, but you can filter your data by sex: Male or Female if you like.
  • Step 5: Select output – You can select Table and Graph to view your data at the same time.
  • Step 6: Execute – Click on Execute to run your new table.

b. Example 1:

  • Step 1: Table title: Type in - Population by marital status, 2011
  • Step 2: Select a variable – Highlight - P12 Marital Status
  • Step 3: Area Break Level – select - MISSING

  • Step 5: Select Output – Select - Table and Graph
  • Step 6: Execute.

redatam page8

c. Result 1 - Table:

The page below shows the Table of data run by Redatam which shows the number and percentages of the total population of Samoa by marital status.
Also note that: You can download the table in Excel and re-format the table to suit your own style and to create your own graph of preference. You can also download the table in PDF format.

 redatam page9

d. Result 2 – Graph: You can also click on Graph to show the graph by marital status for the same Table as shown below.

redatam page10

e. You can also run the same variable (marital status) by sex using the Filter by. For instance you can still use the variable marital status but change the Filter by: Male, then execute as shown below.

redatam page11

f. The Table shows only the Male data by marital status in terms of number and percentages.

redatam page12

g. You can also view the Graph for the same Table of Male data.

Note that you can do the same procedures to get the Table and Graph for females.

redatam page13

B. TABLES AND MAPS – THEMATIC MAPS

The Redatam on-line program also allows you to view the census 2011 data on district maps and region maps in addition to tables and graphs.

The four statistical regions of Samoa are namely: AUA (Apia urban), NWU (North West Upolu), ROU (Rest of Upolu) and the region of Savaii. Note that AUA represents the only urban area or urban region in Samoa, while the other three regions made up the rural areas and rural population.

redatam page15

d. Result 2: Map: As shown on the Table above, the Map is also available with the Table data. The following maps show each category of the marital status (as also shown on the Table data) and the number of persons in each marital category in the four regions of Samoa.

redatam page16

e. You can also run the Table and Maps by districts by choosing DISTRICTS at the Output level.
The Table and Maps of the Population by marital status and by political districts are shown below.
